So I was in Paris overnight yesterday. In possibly the world’s most dull hotel. The only international channel was BBC World, where I got to find out about the lost art of the 1992 Expo. I feel enriched by that. Honest. I have very little of note to share.
So now seems like a good time to catch up on some of the reviews I have been meaning to do. Some lovely people have sent me some gorgeous things for my girls and it's about time I told you about them.
I'll kick off with Plum Baby. A lovely company who make organic baby food using 'superfood' ingredients. The Baby tried the 10 month + food and the toddler tried some snacks.
Now if you're anything like me, finding a suitably nutritious, yummy alternative to making your own baby food is like manna from heaven. Frankly as a working mother with very little time with her children, the last thing I want to be doing is slaving over a hot Anabel Karmel cookbook. Plus unless by sheer fluke (see here) all my food for my the children is rubbish.
The baby has been a bit fussy lately. Either she wants to feed herself, so she's been having chopped up chicken, vegetables and pasta or she has a go with the spoon herself which is EXTREMELY messy. So I wasn't holding out much hope of getting her to eat off a spoon.
But lo and behold she adored the Chickpea and Chicken Tagine with something approaching passion. Gobbled up at least 6 spoonfuls before she remembered she liked feeding herself. By which point I gave her the bowl (secured to the table with one of those brilliant Tommy Tippee bowl holders) with some pieces of bread and she polished it off herself.
I thought that was probably fluke, as she was hungry, but she did the same with the Root Vegetable and Beef Ragout.
I must confess to trying both myself and actually they were rather good. The Tagine especially. I like the fact Plum are not afraid to give babies some actual flavour rather than the usual bland tomato based food. It gets them into a broad variety of food from early on.
As you may know I have a toddler who never stops wanting 'snacks'. She does occasionally eat a meal, but mostly it's those dried fruit bars, raisins, sultanas or something equally squashy that ends up under my shoe. So again I was a bit dubious about her liking Spelt Fingers flavoured with Apple. Maybe it's the fact they look like biscuits, maybe it's the apple-y flavour, or maybe it's the crunch. But she now asks me for 'bisits not with apple in'. Not sure why they are 'not' with apple, you'd have to ask her. But they were a big hit.
They come in handy 2 packs so you can chuck some in your handbag to stave off hunger fuelled tantrums. Genius.
Makes me feel rather virtuous, spelt's got to be healthy hasn't it?
In fact if you do still want to feel like you are making all their food (and why not, I would if I could), they have the recipes on their website, how cool is that.
So that's it for now. But if you haven't tried Plum Baby yet, give it a go. You can buy it in most Sainsbury's and it's definately worth having in the cupboard, also it looks really homemade so you can always pretend you've made it yourself when the mother in law comes to visit.
Not that I'd ever do that of course....
xx
