I do this warily. Last time I wrote about a celebrity mum, Davina McCall, I had all manner of abuse (and some incredible shows of solidarity). Clearly I am just like everyone else, struggling to make sense of being a mother, whilst working and trying to stave off divorce.
But I speak as I find, as you know, so when I read in the Daily Mail this morning (ok, don't shoot me for it, it's all I could manage this sleep deprived morning) that Myleene Klass is actually pretty down to earth I was heartened to feel my coldness toward her melt.
She said:
"Gray's [husband] away alot so I have had to get my determined head on. I'm not going to sugarcoat it, everyone says "Oh our baby brought us closer together" but it didn't bring us closer together initally.
It made me think, Oh my God what have we done!"
Blah blah blah he's her best friend blah blah (I could almost hear the PR frantically shoving in some 'perfect celeb couple' schmaltz). Needless to say the article ends with a PR saying how much in love they are.
Anyway the point is, having a baby can be anything but the sugarcoated bunnies and cuddly toys image it is so often portrayed as by celebrities in magazines. After all their image is their business so you can't blame them making it out to be a perfect fairytale.
But it's refreshing that Myleene was honest enough to admit that it can put a bloody great big strain on a couple and it's really fairly hideous when you have to manage on your own much of the time because your partner is away or working late.
Up the honest mum revolution Myleene, I'm with you all the way.
