Dummy fairy part 3: in which I wonder why on earth I started this...

So you have 2 children, both reasonable sleepers, maybe they wake once or twice a night but nothing a cuddle and a re-plug of a dummy can't help (well less so with one child, but let's not worry about that for the purposes of dramatic effect.).

One day, apropos of nothing really except some imagined belief that one of your children has developed slightly goofy teeth, you decide to take away the device that helps them sleep.

Why would a supposedly sane woman do that?

What is wrong with me??!!

I think this dummy ditching process is similar to giving up ciggies or booze.  You go through phases.

Phase 1: This is a GREAT idea I will STAND FIRM and have much will power.

Phase 2: I knew it wasn't going to easy, but I'm still STANDING FIRM.

Phase 3: Oh fuck this for a game of Penguin Bowling this is a total bloody nightmare. Where's the bottle/packet of fags/dummy?

Phase 4: I can't give up giving up, if I do then the ciggies/booze/dummies have won goddamn it!

Phase 5: Actually there's evidence to say that booze is actually good for you and some tribes in the reaches of outer mongolia use nicotine to improve virility and dummies help prevent cot death (you ignore the fact that your children are no longer babies) so it can't be that can it?

Phase 6: Who am I trying to kid. Oh look, I'm no longer addicted. Success!

I'm at phase 3 right about now.

Wish me luck tonight, I'm probably going to need it. I feel that I've started and I can't back down or I'll lose what credibility I have left with my children. Parenting's hard work isn't it?

In other news I am making some friends in Grownupsville which is really very nice. I feel like I am part of the community and that we 'belong' in a non-Stepford Wife way.   I only wish I didn't spend so much time on a train to London or in an office in London so I had more time to be sociable.  Ah well.
