I always find it amusing and fulfilling when I realise that one of my girls has learnt something new or figured out a part of the world. The latest for Eliza is sizes.
"Mummy," she said while we were driving back from London today after a visit with my best friend Lucy and her two lovely little girls, "I am medium size. Did you know that Mummy?"
"Are you? Right well I suppose you are yes."
"And Mummy?"
"Yes darling?"
"Do you know that Tilly is small?"
"Yes she is, she's smaller than you."
"Yes, and Mummy?"
"Yes?" (believe me EVERY journey is like this lately.)
"You are big."
"Right..well I'm not that big, but I am bigger than you yes."
"Yes you are big. And Daddy..." she looked out of the window, thought about it for a couple of seconds with a very earnest look on her pretty face, "Daddy is large."
"Yes."
"Mummy, did you know that large is bigger than big?"
"Yep, oh look at that horse in the field over there?" I know I should continue to explore the variations in size with her, pounce on any opportunity for furthering my child's desire to learn, but to be honest she doesn't need too much encouragement. Her favourite bedtime story is "Learn your ABC".
I just hope this enthusiasm for learning continues until she's, well until she's very much older and wiser than her mum.
In the meantime I just wish she'd quit all the stalling techniques at bedtime. Tonight we had to put all her toys in size order on her pillow, then she realised that there was no room for her. Cue Mummy running up and down the stairs 10 times to rearrange them until I just shut the door and told her to go to sleep. She actually laughed at me. Like she knew damn well she was trying it on and I was falling for it.
Too damn clever by half.
