Saturday Review: Ladybird books

Ok I know it’s Sunday, but Saturday sort of went in a blur of parties, false starts (I thought my run was yesterday but it’s in about 1 hour, help!) and other things that I won’t go into.

So anyway I did something VERY good in a former life because I have been selected as a Gurgle Girl.  In case you don’t know www.gurgle.com then do visit, it’s a wonderful resource for new parents and expectant mothers. I spent a lot of time on it in the pregnant days and the very early months and I pop in from time to time to visit.  It’s a down to earth site, the sort of thing I like.

A couple of weeks ago I had my first delivery from Gurgle. A bag of Ladybird products. The Ladybird books I remember were ‘Peter and Jane’ and ‘Cooking with Mother’, fantastically politically incorrect images of fathers smoking cigars whilst helping ‘Peter’ change the wheel on his bike, mother always in an apron looking immaculate. They are ingrained in my childhood memories, in particular ‘The Enormous Turnip’.

But times have changed and now this trusted brand, creates really beautiful ‘touch and feel’ and ‘lift the flap’ books for very small people like Tilly, and they have a Peppa Pig range which have buttons children can press and make Peppa laughing/snorting noises, which is about the best thing ever for Eliza.  Tilly’s favourite is ‘Night, Night Baby’ a rhyming flap book. Each page features a cuddly toy that when lifted reveals a sleepy baby. It’s great for starting to get Tilly into the bedtime story routine, and of course Eliza likes to join in too. So it’s a lovely book for me to read with both girls.  The ‘Three Little Pigs’ touch and feel book gives Tilly lots of interesting textures to feel while I read, so she stays engaged and interested.

But best of all, and I’ve mentioned this before, was the Spot the Dog DVD and cookie cutter.  If ever anything has been put to more constant use in our house I’ve yet to find it. We have made batch upon batch of cookies with the incredibly simple recipe that came with them.  I think we might now have mice as a result of all the flour and sugar that has ended up in all the nooks and crannies in the kitchen, but that’s a small price to pay for so much fun.

So thanks Gurgle and thanks Ladybird for providing many hours of real family fun in this Mummy’s life.

*disclosure – all products mentioned were supplied free of charge, however this in no way prejudiced my review which is my honest opinion*
